Reserve Dog - 11/27/05 East Lansing

 

This part of the show was over FAST. Even the Winner's Dog handler took a double take. Alex did get Reserve Dog... maybe next year? This would have been a nice 3 point major, 'cept for that one dog. That is the only way we will look at it. Pure opportunity! I did like this judge. He handled the dogs easily and with confidence.

Alex met sheep and ducks today at the first Ohio Valley Belgian Tervuren Club fundraiser, held at Libbye Miller's in Elizabethtown, KY. Many thanks to Libbye for giving us our first lesson!

On our way home from class today, Alex and I stopped at the Price Hill Incline. A great day! 

 

At the other end of the canal town is a covered bridge - for the boats!

Alex and I visited Metamora today. The sun was shining, about 60 degrees, the leaves were golden. We walked the canal and Alex watched the ducks and the tourists with great interest, The train and whistle made him look, but in true Alex fashion, he was more curious than frightened.

Upstairs, these two are not quite ready to settle down. They really do interact a LOT! I will never again believe that dogs and cats must be enemies. This cat LOVES dogs!

Memphis St Jude Showcase this weekend

 
We had a great time at the Showcase this year. It is our favorite, because we get to see Rebecca and many friends! You can see Alex was very happy while waiting for show times. 

The Concert


When the house lights dimmed and the concert

was about to begin, the mother returned to

her seat and discovered that the child was missing
Suddenly, the curtains parted and spotlights
focused on the impressive Steinway on stage.

In horror, the mother saw her little
boy sitting at the keyboard, innocently picking out

"Twinkle,Twinkle Little Star."

At that moment, the great piano master made his entrance, quickly moved to the piano, and

whispered in the boy's ear,

"Don't quit.""Keep playing."

Then, leaning over, Paderewski reached

down with his left hand and began filling

in a bass part. Soon his right arm reached

around to the other side of the child,

and he added a running obbligato.

Together, the old master and the young novice

transformed what could have been a frightening situation into a wonderfully creative experience.

The audience was so mesmerized that they couldn't recall what else the great master played.

Only the classic,

" Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star."

Perhaps that's the way it is with God.

What we can accomplish on
our own is hardly noteworthy.

We try our best, but the results aren't always

graceful flowing music. However, with the

hand of the Master, our life's

work can truly be beautiful.

The next time you set out to accomplish great feats,

listen carefully. You may hear the voice of the

Master, whispering in your ear,
"Don't quit." "Keep playing"

May you feel His arms around you and

know that His hands are there, helping you

turn your feeble attempts into true masterpieces.

Remember, God doesn't seem to

call the equipped, rather, He equips the 'called.'

There is a judge education website put together by the American Belgian
Tervuren Club that is based on the AKC standard. It is located at
http://www.abtc.org/judges_ed/BreedType1.htm and does have info on gait and a photo. From my understanding, the rear foot should fall into a spot beside or nearly into the one the opposite front foot just left. There should be minimal lift off the ground of the front end, back end or body.
The topline from just behind the withers to the croup should remain
level/parallel to the ground. The head should be carried at an angle
less than 45 degrees from horizontal, the tail should be carried behind the
dog in a straight line and not to one side and not above the level of the
topline. The reach should be at least to but not beyond the nose and the
drive should allow someone standing behind the dog to see the pads of the
dog's feet but none of the top of the dogs foot.
That, in a nutshell, is some info I have gleaned from US and
European breeders over my nearly 20 years in the breed. There is some
discrepency as to whether the dogs legs are supposed to form a "V" when the
dog is moving at a faster gait. The AKC standard says yes, some European
breeders have said no. The front and rear legs should, of course, move
in line parallel with each other and, according to AKC (and Quentin LaHam,
the late noted movement "connisseur"), the area where the feet fall should
converge as the dog picks up speed so that the dog may even show a line of
tracks (i.e. in the snow, etc) that is a single line (single-tracking).
As I said, this is from my background in Belgian Tervuren and
observations in my efforts to paint, draw and design moving Belgians with
the correct gait and is based upon the AKC standard and breeders'
interpretations of it, although much of the info is from a noted European
breeder/judge. Of course there are reasons for each criterion and almost
all have to do with the general idea of covering the maximum amount of
ground with the least amount of effort (and stress to the joints, I might
add). There is so much involved in movement that it is very difficult to
tell much about it simply from one photograph.

Alex saw his first horse, colt and mule today. He didn't pay much attention to the colt and mare at first, too busy running with three other dogs he had just met. He did take a few moments out to sniff the colt's butt through the fence. Go figure - he is a dog. Later, he tried to say hello to the mule, then barked at "Gracie" when she refused to react the way he wanted. This was not the best thing. He started to spook Gracie a bit, but eventually we got them both back where they belong. ;-) Next time we will make sure to have a long line on Alex to keep him away from the back end! I am just glad that little "Blue" did not take him down to the green pond!!

Sunday, Alex is on the lookout. Any second, his buddies Gregor and Finn will be seen on the sidewalk just to the right of his ear, two houses over. He just KNOWS!
